Couple of Things…

Last couple of days I have been in San Fransisco with my company for our retreat. Internet was limited and the sessions were intense that I did not have a whole lot of time to add entries to my blog. A couple of things I found out broke:

  1. letmeparty.com does not upload to wordpress anymore. Mobile blogging by sms is down
  2. Chinatown in SF was nothing what I expected. Too much Hollywood I guess
  3. It was cold

By far Byran Alexander had my interest due to the fact that he and I share the same interest. To keep it short, I am on the floor at SF international waiting for my flight to Houston. I cannot wait to go home.

Work and play

work

When you have a 47″ 1080p LCD as your primary display for your work computer, you really cannot complain too much I guess. It sure makes work-flows easier to design!

On a work related question, I am having problems understanding required attributes for objectclasses in LDAP. Ok for instance take the objectclass eduperson. Within that object are the following attributes:

-eduPersonAffiliation
-eduPersonEntitlement
-eduPersonOrgDN
-eduPersonOrgUnitDN
-eduPersonPrimaryAffiliation
-eduPersonPrimaryOrgUnitDN
-eduPersonPrincipalName

If I do not wish to use eduPersonAffiliation, will that be ok? I mean can you pick and choose which attributes to use in a particular objectclass? Do I sound like a n00b or what? Yes, I know very little about LDAP and trying to burn in knowledge as fast as I can. I do hope to get over this hump as I will next have to tackle Shibboleth authentication. Good times indeed.

On the PS3 front, I have YET to grab a copy of Warhawk. Though the game is considered not very deep, I understand that it is very addictive. Plus Europe just came online yesterday. Yes, I need to grab a copy this weekend, along with a couple of bags of mulch, caulking and plant food. Yes, I must game in between my other chores.

So…busy…

my home

With the departure of a dear working buddy, I stand alone. My company is on a verge of trying something new and without another techie working with me, I am left to man the ship with my boss playing a dual roll. With such an incredible shift, I have become a document monster. Generating, reading, testing, meeting… It is almost impossible to think of anything else at work. Oh work, yes I still have my usual duties and at times things are pushed out as we move in this new direction. A lot of what I am doing is bringing up memories of what I did at AMD. Developing taxonomies, story-boarding the new interfaces, managing work-flows and verify what the business folks want can be done with our in house application. Rails is everything and php is out. Enterprise-class server infrastructure on a tight budget and deliverables on an even tighter timeline. I am stretched and tired but as they say, “you get out what you put in”. Man am I EVER putting in, it better pay out…

My saving grace from the madness? My kiddos, my wife, my home and my Blu-Ray theater with Dolby True-HD and soon Warhawk to help remove the edge!

Sun One and eduperson LDIF

So I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I got an LDAP schema up and was able to create some users, but I need to get the eduperson LDIF into my schema. I want the following objectclasses for my users:

  • top
  • person
  • organizationalPerson
  • inetOrgPerson
  • eduPerson
  • localdomainEduPerson

Top, person, organizationalPerson and inetOrgPerson are standard objects but eduPerson, and localdomainEduPerson are from eduPerson LDIF. I did the import but cannot find the object class listed when I create a new ou. My knowledge of ldap is limited and it shows. If any of my tech buddies out there can help, thanks. If not, I will keep looking.

LDAP and me

It seems that on top of becoming a developer (still something I struggle with), I have been tasked with becoming an LDAP administrator. Thankfully I will not be alone in this endeavor as my co-worker has been pulled in as well. What knowledge do I have with LDAP? What little Andrew has taught me over the years at Colorado College is the extent of it. Does that mean I can design a DIT (Directory Information Tree)? Nope, just know not to mess things up. With David’s deep knowledge we should be able to design, build and launch an LDAP instance in a matter days. David IM’ed me with just one word…”huh?” Yes, he too is a noob to the LDAP world. Plus it will be on a Sun One implementation. Sweet! Let’s see how I can do this quickly. Come on web, don’t fail me now!
